Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! We don’t expect you to bring your sinks and toilets to our office for us to take a look! We’ll gladly make house calls throughout the GTA. We live our lives on the roads, so a bit of travel is no problem for us. If you need us to go further outside the area, we can discuss and see if it’s the right fit for us or if we can refer you to a colleague.
We do everything with integrity, which means that we don’t cut corners, but we also don’t want our clients to feel that anyone is taking advantage of them. We do have flat rates for some of our services, as well as an hourly rate for labour, but it can depend on the situation. When you speak with our team, we’re happy to provide an estimate, and then we can let you know if there is any further work required above or beyond that.
Some of the things you may be doing every single day are building up and leading to clogged drains. If you’re shedding a lot of hair or using products that leave a lot of gunk in the sink and trying to just rinse it down, it doesn’t always rinse down. That hair and soap scum and all of that can build up and really narrow your drains to the point where they clog completely.

Similarly, in the kitchen, foods that you think are washing easily down the drain may not be going down as smoothly as you’d think. For example, grease may seem like a liquid coming out of a frying pan, but when it cools and clumps it can build up into a nasty drain blockage, especially if you’re home frying regularly.

There are easy-to-purchase tools that will help remove some of the simpler drain clogs (like hair), but if you have something that isn’t going easily, give us a call before you start screaming!
It’s not fun trying to shower with low water pressure! There are a few things that can be stopping things from flowing as they should. One may be a clogged water pipe, or even buildup in your shower head that’s impacting things (based on harsh water). You may also be impacted by demand – if multiple people are using the shower at the same time, that will have an impact on supply.

There may also be other issues with pipes or water mains that may need a closer look. A partially closed valve may be the culprit, such as a shower valve or even your main valve, which would restrict the flow of water. There may even be an issue with the size of the water main, which is common in older Toronto homes.

There are things you can do yourself, such as checking your valves to ensure they’re open fully, or looking for any potential leaks that may be impacting pressure. If it’s a demand issue, try showering in off times when there’s less strain on the system. Of course, if none of those options work, please just give us a call and we can come figure out the issue.
There are a few different reasons why your toilet might be running. If you’ve never looked inside your tank, most toilets are actually made up of a few standard mechanisms that, while they can vary slightly between brands, have been similar for decades. There may be an issue with the flapper or a gasket that isn’t sealing properly.

The issue is usually caused by water running in the tank which is continually activating the fill cycle. This may be because your fill valve is faulty, or the float is adjusted too high. It also could be that your flapper is starting to fall apart (this one can be common), or the chain that connects to the handle is too long and getting stuck in places.

Some folks are brave enough to DIY toilet repair, but others don’t know where to start, or they’re too scared to try. We’re here to help. Sometimes the problems can be hard to solve, and sometimes with fancier units, they may not be so obvious. We’re not afraid to roll up our sleeves, and we won’t rest until your toilet is behaving exactly as it should. When that running is driving you crazy, remember we’re only a phone call away.

There are certain things that you can do to keep your home running well throughout a cold winter. For example, running hot water occasionally through rarely-used pipes (think basement sinks, etc.) for a few minutes might help, or even letting warm water drip overnight if needed in some places. Also, ensuring that your house is properly heated and insulated will help protect indoor taps from freezing up due to poor conditions.

However, there are ways that you can take extra measures to keep your house safe. If you notice pipes starting to corrode, get them replaced before they can’t hold up against the cold. Also, if you plan on traveling during the winter, you can install devices that will let you shut down your water even remotely so that you don’t have to worry about anything going haywire while you’re gone.
There are a few things that might cause your pipes to make noise. For example, if your water pressure is too high, it might be leading to sound, but it could also be damaging appliances such as your dishwasher or washing machine which rely on careful releases of water to function properly.

You may also be hearing what’s called ‘water hammer’, which can happen if the water pressure is too high, and then when you shut it off quickly the water comes to a quick stop (think of jamming on your car brakes) and it thuds against the shutoff valve. Or, if you have copper pipes, the metal may be expanding, which can cause friction as it rubs against the structure of your home.

In any event, don’t ignore those noises because they could be a sign of a more serious problem. Pick up a phone and call Eden Water Mechanical instead.
You may have heard that chemical drain cleaners aren’t good for your pipes, and it’s true. These are often highly toxic chemicals that aren’t safe for children or pets, and the fumes they give off can be powerful.

Worse still, these products can corrode your pipes and actually cause further damage. If you’re using them continually, you may just be trying to cover up a larger problem. There are newer products that contain ‘friendly’ bacteria and enzymes which are less toxic, and help prevent grease and sludge buildup. However, if the problem persists, give Eden Water Mechanical a call.
You may laugh every time you’re at a restaurant and see a sign in the washroom asking you to only flush toilet paper, but it’s there for a reason. While our toilets are fairly durable, there are a lot of things we think we can flush that we really shouldn’t. These include: Flushable wipes (believe it or not!)
Paper towel
Bandages
Cotton
Feminine
products
Medications
Grease

Then again, sometimes we can’t always control what goes down the bowl. If your kids flush your car keys, or if you accidentally knock something in that gets stuck, give us a call and we’ll see how we can help.
The reason people hate calling a plumber when they’re not getting hot water is that it usually winds up in a vicious cycle. If your hot water tank or even your tankless system is heated through gas, homeowners aren’t sure whether to call a plumber or an HVAC technician. The plumber usually says to call HVAC, the HVAC person says to call a plumber, and ultimately you’re still left without hot water!

That does not happen when you call Eden Water Mechanical. Because we’re also licensed gasfitters, and trained in gas as well as plumbing, we’re able to diagnose the problem holistically. We understand both parts of the system and how they work together, and we can do a proper diagnostic and make the necessary repairs to get your hot water back on track.
There’s a common misconception that a snowmelt cannot be repaired if it’s under concrete. Usually, the installers don’t do a thorough inspection, and often it’s because they don’t know how. We’re not only experts when it comes to snowmelt systems, but we can use cutting-edge technology to diagnose pinhole leaks and repair them without having to sacrifice the entire system.
